In the Heart of the MountainsThe Arcalod is the highest peak in the Bauges, and it overlooks an area where there is a National Reserve for Hunting and Wildlife, containing considerable herds of chamois. The area is particularly appreciated by hikers and in it are the streams which feed the Chéran. The Chéran is a fast-running river which has its source in the southern part of the Bauges (Bauges devant), passes by Le Châtelard, perched on a glaciated rocky outcrop, and flows on more gently through the northern Bauges (Bauges derrière) before entering the gorge of Banges.
