Nature and landscapes - The Plateau of the Leysse

The Plateau of the Leysse

The gorges of the Leysse are deeply carved in this little plateau situated just above Chambéry. Verdant meadows and orderly orchards are overlooked by the cliffs of Mount Margériaz and the ridge of Mount Peney.

There is a lake, the lac de La Thuile, which nestles in a landscape overlooked by a mountain peak - the Pic de la Sauge - right at the south of the plateau; it is just the place for walkers who enjoy quiet, rustic surroundings. The diversity of the sites and environments of the plateau provide opportunities for various activities: dizzying passages in the cliffs of the Peney, the panoramic view-point under the large cross (the Croix du Nivolet, lit up at night), the rope suspension footbridge at the Trou de l'Enfer on a local hiking trail, the old ice-making caves of Thoiry and the nature-discovery walk on Mont Saint-Michel in meadows and dry grasslands protected under Natura 2000.
